Springtime is making its way into Walled Lake, Michigan and we know that our customers are just as excited about the weather shift as we are. With the turn of the seasons comes so many beneficial things. People are getting out more, getting more exercise, seeing loved ones in a safe, physically-distanced way, and kids are able to enjoy parks and backyards again.
Unfortunately, one not-so-great thing about spring in Michigan is the return of annoying pests – which can also be harmful if not treated correctly. To make sure that your kids, pets, and home are protected this winter, follow along to see how what you can do to prevent pests this season.
Everyone always says that prevention is key. If you don’t have a problem in the first place, you don’t have to find a solution. One way to ensure this is to make sure you keep food indoors. Now, we aren’t talking about a backyard barbeque, we’re talking about the snacks. Kids will often walk in and out all day and leave crumbs of goldfish crackers, juice boxes, fruit snacks, and other food that is extremely appealing to insects all over your yard. By asking your kids to come inside until they are done with their snacks regularly, you will automatically cut down on insects.
This goes for pests that make their way into your home too. Leaving leftovers out or not taking out the trash on a regular basis will surely attract these nasty pests inside your home, and it can be frightening and a hassle to call an exterminator when the issue gets too large.
Even with all of this prevention going on, insects happen. There is no one way to ensure your kids and pets never track in a pest or even find interest in one while playing outside. This is where protection comes in. Bug spray can really work wonders, but so can some essential oils. Oils like cedarwood, lemongrass, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, and other citrus oils can be used around your yard or even on a bracelet to keep mosquitoes away from kids.
As for your pets, you likely already have some sort of flea prevention in place for them. But don’t discount the act of checking them for ticks often during tick season. This will ensure that ticks don’t come into your home and that your pet isn’t suffering because you waited to check their fur.
